Overview / About the Scholarship
The Commonwealth Scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious international award programs in the world. Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), it is designed to support high-achieving individuals from Commonwealth countries who have the potential to make a significant developmental impact in their home nations.
In the UK, these scholarships are managed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). They aim to provide access to world-class British education for students who would otherwise be unable to afford it, fostering leadership and innovation across the Commonwealth.
Scholarship Value / Benefits
The Commonwealth Scholarship is fully funded, providing comprehensive financial support so students can focus entirely on their studies. Key benefits include:
Full Tuition Fees: All university fees are covered by an agreement between the CSC and the UK university.
Stipend (Living Allowance): A monthly stipend of approximately £1,452 (or £1,781 for those at universities in the London metropolitan area) to cover accommodation and daily expenses.
Travel: Return economy-class airfare from your home country to the UK.
Allowances: A warm clothing allowance for your arrival, a thesis grant for dissertation costs, and a study travel grant for essential academic trips.
Family Support: In specific cases (such as for widowed, divorced, or single parents), child allowances may be available.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship, applicants must generally meet the following requirements:
Citizenship: Citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country.
Residency: Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
Academic Background: By the start of the scholarship (September 2026), hold at least an upper second-class honours degree. For PhD applicants, a relevant Master’s degree is usually required.
Financial Need: Demonstrate that you are unable to afford to study in the UK without this financial assistance.
Commitment: Be available to start academic studies in the UK by September/October of the intake year.
