Overview / About the Scholarship
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is among the most prestigious academic honors in the world, offering exceptional Pakistani students a life-changing opportunity to pursue postgraduate research at the University of Cambridge. Established through a historic donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the program seeks to identify and support future leaders who are academically brilliant and committed to social change.
Launched in 2000 with a US$210 million donation, this scholarship program aims to create a global network of future leaders. It currently maintains a community of approximately 250 scholars in residence at Cambridge at any given time. Since its inception, more than 1,700 scholars from over 100 countries have benefited from this endowment.
Scholarship Value / Benefits
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a full-cost award that covers both academic and personal expenses:
University Composition Fee: Full coverage of all tuition and college fees.
Maintenance Allowance: A stipend of £22,050 per year (at 2025-26 rates) to cover living costs.
Airfare: Economy single airfare at the start and end of the course.
Visa & Health: Coverage for inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
Discretionary Funds: Access to academic development funding (between £500–£2,000), family allowances, and maternity/paternity support.
Eligibility Criteria
Pakistani applicants must meet the following core requirements:
Nationality: Must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
Academic Excellence: Intellectual ability is a primary selection criterion.
Leadership Potential: Applicants must demonstrate a capacity to lead and inspire.
Social Commitment: Documented commitment to improving others' lives is essential.
Level & Field of Study
Eligible Degrees: PhD full-time or part-time, MLitt full-time, or one-year postgraduate courses (e.g., MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA).
Exclusions: The scholarship does not cover Undergraduate degrees, BA, Master of Finance (MFin), PGCE, or clinical doctorates, MD.
Host University / Provider Info
The University of Cambridge is the exclusive host for this scholarship. While this award is specific to Cambridge, it is notable that over 160 UK higher education institutions currently accept students from Pakistan. In the 2024/25 academic year, the UK hosted over 685,000 international students, with Pakistan consistently among the top sending countries.
Required Documents
Applications are submitted through the Cambridge Graduate Application Portal and typically require:
Gates Cambridge Statement: A 500-word essay explaining your fit for the scholarship.
Academic Transcripts: Complete records of all previous higher education.
CV/Resume: A detailed summary of academic and professional experience.
References: Two academic references for admission, plus one specialized reference for the Gates Cambridge award.
Research Proposal: Required for all PhD applicants.
How to Apply
Select Course: Choose an eligible postgraduate program at Cambridge.
Submit Application: Apply via the Graduate Application Portal for both admission to the university and the scholarship.
